POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for supervising overall operation of the pharmacy department in absence of Pharmacy Director. Requires extensive contact with the other departments in the hospital (nursing, dietary, respiratory, med staff). Also, performs clinical and professional duties as required by regulatory agencies; optimizes patient outcomes. Directs, oversees, and allocates activities of employees engaged in compounding, mixing, packaging, labelling and dispensing prescribed medications, drugs and other pharmaceuticals for patient care, according to professional standards and State and Federal legal requirement. Directs and provides consultative advice to nursing and medical staffs. Answers questions and provides information on drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and procurement of pharmaceuticals. Follows established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste. Recommends and informs medical personnel of drug applications and characteristics.

Maintains library of references and copies of regulations with all related support documentation to include ( not all inclusive) invoices, orders, inventories, computer generated records
Manages a well run department with supervision of a trained and dependable staff
Promotes the safe and effective use of medications
Establishes relevant training e.g. IV
Maintains proper distribution throughout the facility
Provides that a pharmacist dispenses and is available after hours
Attends hospital meetings in the absence of the Pharmacy Director and subscribes to policies
Attends meetings that promote benchmarking and best practices.
Provides up to date pharmaceutical care with proper dosing of low volume/ high risk products
Acts in a knowledgeable and timely manner for new or unusual situations
Continually keeps abreast of all regulatory standards to maintain compliance with JCAHO/CMS in ongoing perpetration for survey readiness.
Models the way with Customer Service program initiatives through active participation evidenced by staff representation on committees and events.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Education: Graduate of an accredited school or college of pharmacy.
Experience: Healthcare systems pharmacy
